DECEMBER 28, 2009 What's Your New Year's Resolution?
OK, you didn't keep your resolutions last year or the year before. So what? New Year, new opportunity. More than 40 percent of American adults make resolutions, and while only 46 percent are still on track after June, simply making a resolution means you're 10 times more likely to succeed!
Most women make resolutions about money, weight loss, self improvement and relationships. But when we asked top businesswomen about their commitments this year, not one mentioned promotions, higher salary or more treadmill time. Instead, they plan to change company culture and make their own lives more beautiful.
Alison Potts Shirley, vice president, Boatright Companies Celebrate Victories: "I will take more time to celebrate the projects I'm involved with and our successes, and seek the thrill of the unknown."
Barbara Adachi, managing principle, Deloitte's Women's Initiative Balance Better: "I've become better at juggling work, family, travel, friends and 'me' time over my 30-year career, but the balancing act remains. I'd like to live Deloitte's 'corporate lattice' model."
Leslie Blodgett, CEO, Bare Escentuals Have More Fun: "It's all about increasing the frequency of our mid-afternoon, impromptu dance parties in the office."
Susan Nethero, owner and founder, Intimacy Be grateful: "Gratitude is like a garden; by planting seeds of thanks we bear fruits and grow! I will try to be thankful (even in adversity). That's what strengthens and forces us to embrace our values."
