More Cash in Your Pocket

Sure, you'd love to have the extra dough to splurge on that Chanel suit – or a portable laptop (hello, telecommuting). But a weekend gig smuggling diamonds in addition to your 9-to-5? Not happening. What if you could earn a few bucks (or a grand) from home in your spare time?

"You don't have fixed potential, so why accept fixed income," New York Times best-selling financial author, Loral Langemeier, tells PINK. Her new book, Put More Cash in Your Pocket: Turn What You Know Into Dough, outlines how to use your skills to earn up to $1,000 a month without getting another job. "For instance, if you do web design, you could provide those services for other (noncompeting) businesses in your area. A Web search will tell you what others are charging for that service in your area, which is probably more than your hourly rate at work."

Here are some other options to get you started:

Sell your technical, marketing or professional expertise to businesses looking for temporary or occasional support through Elance.

The Internet offers a plethora of easy ways to earn some quick cash – from secret shopping, to blogging, to taking surveys. Check out WebWorkerDaily.com and MoneyMakingMommy.com for ideas.

Don't want to stare at a computer on the weekends? iVillage and AARP magazine have suggestions that get you out of the house (i.e., dog walking, elder care and tutoring).

Bonus PINK Link:  PINK Editor Cynthia Good discusses legitimate work-from-home opportunities and warns about scams to avoid.

Busy? Pick up Life/Work balance tricks from America's most influential women in business at PINK's Fall Empowerment Series (presented by MetLife).
